CHICAGO’S CULTURAL HISTORIAN

Tim Samuelson, Chicago’s first and only cultural historian, has been collecting pieces of our city’s past since he was a little boy. In this short film created for the Design Museum of Chicago’s 2021 annual fundraiser, Tim describes how over 20,000 objects and 100,000 photos will be digitized and archived to maximize access and give his collection longevity.

“I’ve always been a mortal enemy to dry historical exhibits. It’s not about the stuff, it’s about what they represent and who created them.”

— Tim Samuelson

“My nonprofit is called Outlaw A. The ‘A’ stands for Archive, Architecture, and Anarchy.”

Tim aims to make his eclectic collection of artifacts from Chicago’s history available to anyone to touch, feel, and interact with.
